INTERNET MARKETING DRIVE THRU

Planning an effective internet marketing strategy can be difficult and confusing at times.  I’ve seen a lot of web development companies and “SEO experts” that just pick and choose from this menu.  Clients hear about the next big thing and want on-board regardless if they really need it or not.  Today’s marketing mix has it’s own challenges.  Blogs, YouTube Videos, RSS Feeds, Podcasts, it all sounds so yummy and delicious, just like fast food.  But we all know what fast food leads to.

Putting together a marketing mixture for you business that looks something like “1 Social Media Network with extra pickles and a side of Viral” -may not be the best thing for your business and brand.  Yet the orders keep coming and everyone is wanting to try the next big thing.  Here’s a few things to think about as you plan your internet marketing strategy:

What percentage of your customers are using these platforms regularly?
What is the plan to maintain something like a blog? (they require a lot of effort—trust me)
How will you deal with negative feedback?
How transparent are you willing to be?
How will these channels compliment the traditional/digital ones?
What will make your effort genuine vs. feeling “staged”?

I know there is more, but just think of this as a little fast food for thought.  Internet marketing is constantly changing, but it’s best to combine calculated experimentation with strategic planning vs. the “midnight munchies” approach to selecting tactics.  And although it may look yummy and appealing in the menu.  Not everything is good for your business, just like food.

I found your blog post while searching Google. Very informative, especially since this is not an issue a lot of people are familiar with…

  5. Armando,

    Great point.

Many business owners “just want to have their marketing taken care of”… this is why hucksters hawking the “newest social media strategy” will get ears…

Personally, if I can’t get a potential client to identify target metrics for success, I don’t take them on as a client. With PPC, it’s primarily a numbers game, and hence, if they can’t play numbers with me, it’s not worth my time.

However, most marketers / designers don’t get that luxury with their clients. What methods of education do you use to help your clients develop a strategic marketing plan?
