When the online retail market was growing in excess of 20% annually, a complete site redesign every couple of years and the periodic roll-out of a new feature or function might have been enough to boost sales.   But these days, when retailers are battling economic headwinds, they are more frequently putting web site design under the microscope.

Now is the perfect time to reassess your tactics and identify what’s working and what’s not. Run through the list below to ensure that your ecommerce site is up to snuff.  Here are the 5 reason why your ecommerce site could be failing.

1. Too Slow…
People are impatient as it is, and can’t stand when they have to wait around for your ecommerce site to load.  Not only do people bounce off of your site because of it, but Google also dings your site for it by not giving your ecommerce site as much love if it is slow.  If you do not ensure your hosting and software is up to par, then you will lose out on traffic and sales.

2. Ugly Design
Having an ecommerce website that looks like it hasn’t been updated since 2004 is not the best way to make customers feel like you are still in business.  Having a fresh and clean look will ensure that your business is up to date with current trends.   It is also important to utilize technology that will enhance a buyers experience like Video, Live Chat, Dynamic Content, and blogs.

3.  Lack of Security
If an online shopper does not feel the purchase they will make is secure, then they will not checkout of the shopping cart.  Making sure you have at least a 128bit SSL Certificate will keep your customers feeling safe and not worried their credit card might end up in the wrong hands.

4. Poor Search Feature
Having a great navigation is one thing, but if you do not have a powerful search tool to go with it, your online shoppers may not easily find what their looking for, which can result in a loss of sale.  Making sure your customers do not have to search multiple times to find their product will increase sales and have a happy customer.

5. SEO
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is the difference between making $10.00 a day and making $10,000 a day!  Having an ecommerce store is not like having a brick and mortar store; You can’t benefit from foot traffic.  Instead you have to be found online by major search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing and others.  And to do this, you need to make sure your ecommerce software takes SEO in to account.

I think this is a good start to show why a lot of e-commerce sites are starting to fail. Another one is that they aren’t using API’s like USPS, FedEx, and UPS to get real time shipping. The way of flat shipping costs are going away because people shouldn’t have to pay more for shipping than the actual product. The Easy API http://theeasyapi.com we are building our own API that will combine the three major services and show which ones are cheaper. It will be available to programmers in the next month or two.
